Neptune Pool

Neptune Pool by fangleman
Neptune Pool, a photo by fangleman on Flickr.

If only we could swim in it! This is an awesome sight, and a highlight of Hearst Castle. In my experience it is best to be there for the first morning tour if you want to get a shot or two of Neptune Pool without all the other people in the shots.

It is one of the hardewst things I find when traveling - getting a 'clean' shot without people.

Feel free to comment or critique!

This was taken using my Canon wide angle zoom at 10mm. I've found most often that people around me don't realize that they are in the shot. They don't realize how wide of an angle is in frame. I cropped a little off the right that was underexposed and didn't help the shot any.

I searched Fllickr for similar images. I think mine is better than anything I found.

Point of Impact

I used my Tamron 18-250mm lens for this, I normally wouldn't use this lens for studio shots. In fact I normally don't use this lens at all if I have a choice, and studio shots allow that. Today however I am tired, and maybe getting sick, and this lens was on the camera. I'm in a hurry - which is common because I want to create a photo, and still get to sleep. I have a job in the morning you know...

For my Ruger MK3, I bought this cheap chinese made Tasco spot scope at Walmart on a whim, while awaiting my chance to get .22LR ammo. I was going to buy a better one, but decided I'd try the cheapest one available first and see if it works for me. Can't wait to dial it in and shoot a few hundred rounds.

It will be going back though, as the "paint" is flaking off the knobs already and I've only turned them a few times. I'll trade it for another one and see if that one lasts a few days...

These shots would really be easier with someone else holding the pistol. Guns get heavy after awhile...I took about 15 shots and this one I think hit the target. A little editing and this is the result. I hope you like it.

I focused on the target, though the red dot is actually inside the scope, adn therefore blurry. IT isn't as noticable with the naked eye, but through the camera you can see this well. Focusing somewhere inside the area of the scope produced an image that had no detail at all at the target, as expected.

I wanted to make this in one image, and not multiple images stacked and edited. So the target got the focus.

If you've stayed with me this far, feel free to comment on the image or anything else on your mind.

Technical details:
- 14 images taken hand held.
- Camera used in portrait mode for all shots.
- RAW files converted to TIFF without any adjustments.
- Combined TIFF files in Photoshop.
- The light was very harsh noon sun.

Though certainly far from perfect, I don't think it turned out all that bad either. I like the general look and feel. It really feels like I am there again, standing in the burning hot sun sweating every last bit of moisture out of my body...

Though certainly far from perfect, I don't think it turned out all that bad either. I like the "w" curve of the wall that is actually 2 straight sections at a corner. I like the centered clouds. I like the general look and feel. It really feels like I am there again, standing in the burning hot sun sweating every last bit of moisture out of my body...

I saturated and adjusted the background color, and cropped the original shot very tight. What do you think?

Post Obama trash. A sad testament.

This was an extremely common sight after all the people were gone. Litter was all over before he visited, and after he left the beautiful city of San Juan had even more trash like this. Litter everywhere, just tossed on the ground or stuffed into cracks. Even with unfilled trash cans nearby.

Very sad statement about these supporters... Very sad. So many of the same people that are insanely religious about my responsibility to save the planet, don't practice what they preach.

I shot a lot of police bikes while in San Juan. It seemed they had several different models. They were generally corroded and rusty which one might expect being so close to sea water.

See the notes on the photo.

Obama's Motorcade in San Juan, PR

Often, where I go the POTUS follows. Well, it's been true of Barrack Obama so far...

This time we happened to be in the fort, Castillo de San Cristóbal, when the motorcade came by. One of these black SUV's was very likely to contain the President of the United States.

Overall, not very exciting, as they sped quite briskly past on Munoz Riviera and turned up Norzagara/Del Valle.

I think it's a different color than the last time I was there.

Why, in a city with such abundant sunshine, are there so many outdoor lights on during the day? I like it for photography. It makes the pictures better, but what about saving the planet? I can't use incandescent light bulbs and these people leave the lights on all day? WTF?

I'm only just beginning to see the real you

Not feeling like a whole person lately.

EWR Landing

EWR Landing a video by fangleman on Flickr.

Poor quality video I know. Well, my camera didn't take good video, and it's compressed for the web. Still, it's 90 seconds of landing in Newark, NJ.

I enjoyed meeting the shadow of the plane, as well as seeing that long freight train. There's Beyonne Bridge in the distance as well as the cranes in Newark Bay. Flying North, along route 95.

San Juan Cobblestones

San Juan Cobblestones by fangleman
San Juan Cobblestones, a photo by fangleman on Flickr.

I love the cobblestones here. They offer the photographer many possible omages..

The cobblestones have color in Old San Juan. They are not stone or bricks. These cobblestones were an ingenious use of slag from Spain’s iron foundries. Slag is a waste product when iron is refined. Made into blocks the slag made long lasting cobblestones. The stones were brought to the island as ship ballast in the 16th century and their blue tint gives the streets a colorful, Caribbean look.
