What was your first new bike?

Honda Hawk GT 650 here. I bought it with a few miles on the clock. It was a demo bike. I got a nice discount for that.

Scanned from print. 35mm Nikon 4004s most likely with 50mm lens. Unedited, except for the license plate blur.

Still today a gorgeous piece of machinery, and a great ride that I should put back on the road.

Honda Hawk GT 650 parked in front of my apartment during my time at Penn State.

I added the fairing. The gas tank has a painting of the grim reaper on it. Shortly after this I built my own rear fender removal kit.

Scanned print from Nikon 4004s 35mm using pandigital scanner. Cropped and straightened, added contrast and saturation in photoshop.

They say we're young and we don't know

Honda Hawk 650 GT. From the pictures with this one, I'd say this is the first day I owned the bike. Memories... Oh, but I still own the bike!

I think the image was taken using my old Nikon 4004s and 50mm lens.

Scanned from print using a Pandigital film/print/slide scanner. Not great quality. I'm looking at getting a "real" scanner for film. This was quick and easy to use though, and certainly a good choice for some people's needs.

One which fears the people most, the other the government.

This should need no description.

Handheld shot at night, when the lighting is the most dramatic. More editing than it looks like.

I aspire to have created a photo that is even a small part as great as the man and memorial.

I recommend this memorial at dusk for the most powerful effect. The wall of faces and these statues are very capable of haunting you.

Seeing through the digital masquerade

Photo Recipe:

2 Canon strobes pointed at the ceiling for diffused light from above.
Strobes fired using ST-E2
Hold iPad with x-ray image displayed.
Use manual mode, expose for the iPad image, crank up or down the strobes to expose the background as desired.

Minimizing and eliminating the reflections was the largest problem. One must pay attention to each light source, and how the camera will see that reflaction in the glass of the iPad. Not just the light source, but also any walls or objects that are well lit by the strobes or other lighting sources.

Shot from the car driving through....uh...somplace between Newport, RI and New York...

This was a last second decision quick shot. As you can see, I got some of the car's window and door in the lower right corner. I am pleased to have achieved what I think is an excellent composition in for a quick shot. Other than the piece of car, I can't find any real faults in the image. Heck, even with the car I think it's very good. In some ways, that just adds to the overall image design and feeling.

Snow in October.

Snow in October. a video by fangleman on Flickr.

Watch the branches slowly give in to the weight of snow.

Your Knowledge of Me is Binary. I Am My Own Analog.

Yes, so I still have no internet at home. The feeling of being disconnected is a surprise to me. Of course, there were several things I wanted to accomplish this weekend that required an internet connection. This October snowfall prevented that. It could have been worse...

Here's the Photo Recipe & strobist info:
Strobes set subject left and subject right. Bounced off ceiling, and a bounce card to direct some light to the subject. Ratio of 1:2 for the strobes. Height was about head level on stands. I used a 430 and 580 Canon strobes, fired using ST-E2 IR transmitter. I set the intervalometer to about 15 seconds and let it shoot away. I used AF to allow it to focus on me properly. I set the flash exposure to evaluative and a little hotter, +1 I think.

The image on the iPad was made in the same way, but edited through one of those common filters that many photo editing programs have built-in.

I originally had a different photo on the iPad, but went with this one for this image. I may put up the other ones I created at a later date. One was more Halloween-ish, but I wasn't quite happy with it.

This was a quick "what if". A sample shoot, so to speak, to see how an idea looks "on film". If I like the concept well enough, and can bring together all the elements well, I will do it again, bigger and better, so to speak.
